Ruining Christmas With Jean-Paul Sartre

Hello again wellwishers...

Just starting a new collaboration that I wanted to tell you about. A very exciting project with a French philosopher. He's called Jean-Paul Sartre and he's agreed to write some pithy stuff about Christmas for me which I'm going to weave into my tapestry of disappointment. The project is called 'Ruining Christmas' (Ruiner de Noël) - and I think it's going to work out great. Hopefully available as a book to order soon as the ideal Christmas gift. I may even be translating some of his stuff into French. It will probably lose some nuances, but I would hate for his native audience to miss out.

Baby Demons

You are a couple in your late twenties or early thirties. It's about the time that people often start a family. But your ambitions are in the way, there's too much to do. Too many apps to download, too many 'projects' on. Maybe you are stretching your education out like a rubber sheet to cover most of your adult life. Fine. But out there in the spirit world your babies are waiting and they can only wait so long. You don't want the responsibility of a family yet so you get a dog. One of those with a squashed face (like a baby's). But the tragedy is this... you think you bought a dog, one of those ones that can barely breathe, but instead you got a demon, the soul of an unborn baby, trapped in the body of a dog.

If you see one of these bat faced monstrosities on the street, with a hipster couple pulling it along... shout at the top of your voice... "BABY DEMON, BABY DEMON!"

Breeding Notes:
I personally think that given that all dogs are pretty much descended from the elegant, wild and natural wolf, that it seems pretty strange to interbreed and select dogs to be tiny and hardly able to breathe. Fair enough if it was humans. I don't think there would be anything wrong in finding humans who had unusually flat faces and breathing difficulties while also being small and selectively breeding them until you had 2 foot tall people with no nose, googly eyes and tiny little legs. That's fine. But to distort another species almost beyond recognition...

How to be an English illustrator:

Projects are always 'jolly exciting'.

Your vocabulary is strictly controlled and in the style of Bertie Wooster. You say things like:

"the whole shebang"
"ruddy nice"
"hello kids"
"at the end of play"
"stand down"
"what ho!"

Your work is usually described as:
"...eclectic , playful, exquisite, charming, hand-drawn, quirky, enchanting, mysterious".

You are worried about 'selling out' - but you'd like to sell some of your work to 'pay the bills'. You probably live in a grisly damp flat in one of Broken Britain's most exciting and dirty urban playgrounds. But your work is more likely usually about either owls or drinking tea. Or owls who drink tea. Or balloons, or squirrels, or any animals that talk and also wear hats and drink tea. You never look out the window and draw what you see for fear of being labelled 'urban'. This would prejudice advertising agencies and mobile phone companies from using your exquisite ballooning illustrations to sell their new airtime offers.

All this is fine, but in the end we have to be careful as artists that we don't spend most of our energy building charming and dishonest aesthetics just to sell products. We live in a complex and interesting world, not always a twee and colourful one. We don't have to act like war photographers, looking for the best angle on a smoking corpse, but we need to remain honest about how we use our creativity.

Let us not become the next generation of chocolate box painters.

Hi there blog readers and general wasters of time. I make my living by drawing pictures. I get paid to make pictures to go on clothes, help fill up the spaces between adverts in magazines, form part of adverts to sell stuff, and to be made into videos and animations. I also do less commercial stuff like publish my own books and put on art shows. I've been doing this personal, challenging, rewarding, exhausting and largely solitary work for ten years. I'm in need of a bit of fresh air in my routine - I go to my office, draw, paint, write emails and send out webshop orders - repeat. For the next year I'm going to be looking at new ways to use my creative energy to entertain myself and others. I'm not stopping doing work, but I want to try new things. Break all my bad habits.

My friend Adam asked me to make a vast army of running stickmen for his band's new video. It really helped me get my animation chops up to speed. I started by videoing real runners from my bicycle to get a perfect side on position. Then splitting the video into frames, then drawing stickmen over the video frames. About four weeks work for a few seconds animation. Worth it! Great song too...

It's graduation week for high-school students in Denmark... everyone gets a graduation hat. And then the drinking begins.

There are a huge number of hat related graduation traditions. For example:

Everyone in your class writes their name in your hat.
The person with the biggest hat size buys everyone a beer.
Your best friends must bite the brim of the cap.
Each time you see the sunrise you get a notch in the sweatband.
Stay awake for 24 hours and you get to wear your hat backwards.
Have sex with a classmate you used to hate and get a square notch in the sweatband.
Drink a case of beer and wear the bottle cap as a badge.
Get your stomach pumped and tear off the brim.
Fuck the doctor or nurse and take off the chinstrap.
Bathing nude and get waves drawn on your hat.
Fuck a biology teacher and draw a beetle.
Sex with the hat on? Draw lightning on it.
Drunk under the table get a notch cut in the sunshade / peak.

Title of article is 'Princess of Whales' - nice try, but it's just not about Diana Princess of Wales and giving it a title alluding to her won't sell more papers. Nice to see a sense of humour at Britain's biggest fearmongering arserag though.

Do a lot - I mean hundreds - of drawings from the magazines, mostly respecting the viewers foreshortened perspective while reading and then arrange lovingly in a pocket sized book which shows both the front and back of all the drawings. The back of a marker pen drawing is beautiful I think.

Pierre-Adrien Dracon and Fabrice Houdry are bike culture freaks and gallerists. They are organising an art and culture show all about Bicycle Polo. That's Polo - y'know, like with horses that toffs play, but on bikes. Bike Polo is an old sport with a renewed fire. The fixie fashion has stimulated interest in it, and it's really taken off again.

I need a place to stay in Le Havre in France. Do you know anyone who has an apartment to rent there in May? Or maybe in Rouen? Or somewhere nearby. I thought I'd go down there, soak up the cheeses and also be at the art show to make some film, shoot some pics and do some drawings.

So, who wants to lend me / rent their place? I'll need something from early May.

Paris - This Week's City of Culture

Er, hi... or should I say "Bonjour".

Because I'm bourgeois I travel around Europe eating in fancy restaurants, wearing pointy toed suede boots in a fetching maroon colour and looking at fine oil paintings through my monocle. In the past this blog has been too concerned with maintaining an easy and accessible tone. So, from now on I will be dealing with high culture, fine wines etc.

This week we are in Paris, city of romance. And looking at some interesting paintings by Jean-Léon Gérôme; a Frenchman. Some of his exquisite works are on show at the Musee D'Orsay in Paris right now. Here's some I liked.

In this painting we see a sculptor and his new mistress and model throwing a cloth over a nearly completed sculpture of the artist's old mistress. The sculptor is pretending to wash his trowel while sneaking a glimpse at her vag.

Here we see a girl from a good family who has just graduated from the London College of Printing. She is working for free in a sculpture factory in Hackney painting a 'limited edition' of mass-produced street art statuettes for the Chinese market. She thinks she's hit paydirt and is planning to upgrade her iPhone. The iPhone is actually made in China so this is a beautiful example of economic circularity and solid evidence of fiscal recovery.

I've been working on a book of drawings of pages from magazines, some of them are pretty raunchy (from porn)... The book is designed to show both the back and the front of every drawing - the pens I draw with soak through the paper, and often the back of a drawing is as nice as the front.

I'm offering it as a free digital download pdf for devices like the iPhone, iPad and your laptop. There are 44+ pages so far - with more to come. In time it will be released as a printed book. It is in a process of constant improvement.
